Germany.
Mara was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, in 2016. Two years after, her colon was removed, and an ileostomy formed. The first surgery led to several emergency surgeries, leaving her with a long scar on her belly and a permanent, continent ileostomy.
After being diagnosed, Mara felt quite isolated with her illness. That is why she decided to raise awareness for invisible illnesses and disabilities, such as ulcerative colitis, and shared her story through Instagram. Still, she felt underrepresented in social media and the fashion industry.
So, in 2020 she decided to participate in the Miss Germany competition and was named Miss Bremen 2021, willing to talk about chronic illness and disabilities publicly. During this competition she gained first model experiences in shootings for campaign shoots and brands like Tamaris, TIGI and c&a. Also, she participated in a performance training.
Additionally, Mara shared her story in several TV shows for German local television.
After years of not being capable to do any sports, Mara now enjoys spending her free time on catching up what she missed the years prior. Besides running, yoga and bodyweight training, she is also attending kickboxing classes and just started learning to roller-skate.
