Arelyse is a loving, funny and kind child with a beautiful smile born and raised in South West London. Diagnosed with Down syndrome postnatally, she has had a lot medical issues resulting in many hospitalisations, including heart surgery and epilepsy which she has made full recovery form in the last year. At the moment she is non-verbal, but does have good understanding and is in the process of learning Makaton to communicate.
She is currently in nursery on a hybrid placement between two institutions. She has had a lot of practice entering new environments with all of the therapy groups she has been part of and enjoys being around other children her own age. Arelyse has great ability to walk into a situation and own it - it is often commented that she has great confidence especially in new settings. To say she is active is an understatement, Arelyse loves to stay busy i.e. she loves running up and down and if not watched carefully she will definitely get up to something as she is curious by nature.
Affectionately nicknamed “Panda” by her family, Arelyse was the catalyst for an online support and information group for Black and Mixed families supporting individuals with Down syndrome - Panda’s Tree.
Arelyse loves being in water (she just has to be careful with it getting into her ears - and doesn’t like it going over her head), being on holiday and in different places - she enjoys alternative environments. She is a bit of a daredevil; tenacious in character, if she doesn’t succeed she will always try again - her bouncebackability is amazing.
She is a bit of what used to be described as a “Tom boy”. She likes to play rough and climb. She love lights - but can be easily distracted by them. Music and nursery rhymes are her passion - she also enjoys watching Cocomelon and Little Baby Bum. She also enjoys looking at her reflection; she is often caught kissing herself or checking out her “bot bot” (bottom) in the mirror. She is unintentionally hyperflexible - a cool skill that she probably isn’t even aware of.
Arelyse is independent, at least she would like to be, determined and knows her own mind. She loves praise, laughter, tickles and hugs. If encouraged and given the right attention she can really do well if supported correctly and positively.
