BIOGRAPHY
Maya is an actor and disability advocate from Scotland.
She is a manual wheelchair user.
Maya found her love for acting at a very young age and hasn’t left the stage or screen since. Over the years she has trained with numerous well-known youth theatres and companies including The National Youth Theatre, The Scottish Youth Theatre and RCS Junior Conservatoire. She describes how acting gives her the opportunity to forget about her disability and express herself in a completely new way, getting lost in the moment and the character. Maya has recently just finished filming for McDonald and Dodds series 2 which aired on ITV at the beginning of March.
She can play as young as 14.A massive challenge that Maya dealt with throughout her childhood and teenage years was body confidence. Her spinal fusion in 2013 changed the shape of her back. She used to find it extremely difficult to post any photos of herself from certain angles and most often wore outfits which kept her back hidden. 4 years ago Maya set out to change the way she felt about her body by taking part in more photo shoots and disability awareness campaigns.
Over the years Maya has come to find beauty in her body and is on a mission to help others do the same no matter what their body difference.Other than acting Maya absolutely loves travelling, trying new foods and reading especially when it comes to dystopian thrillers!
Maya also used to swim competitively and specialises in breaststroke and back crawl. Maya’s hope is that in the future anyone can turn on the TV or open a magazine and find someone who represents them. She is also invested in making the acting industry more inclusive and encouraging more disabled actors to not let there disability stop them from entering the industry.
